AGV system in YKK production – Ascoli Piceno – Italy

YKK Mediterraneo in Ascoli Piceno replaced its previous AGV system with an Autostore, moving from pallet-based to box-based management.

After consolidating the project, the company decided to deliver the boxes directly to the production departments, ensuring complete data traceability and fulfilling the Industry 4.0 concept.

The current project involves five QR code-guided AGVs, which transport boxes from the warehouse to the departments and vice versa.

The commissioning took a month and a half, and now the customer can finally stop transporting boxes with manual forklifts and switch to fully automated management.

For this project, we developed both the on-board navigation software, based on the standards of the Muratec Group’s AGVE company, and the AGV traffic management and control software, based on AGVE’s BAM system.

Due to the non optimal floor condition, we had to think in advance about how to place QR codes on the floor in a way that they will stay there long time, keeping the QR code itself enough safe and clear so that the AGV camera could read it correctly through the years.

In this project we have been placing more than 1000 QR codes, coveryng a large layout for AGVs.

Another crucial point for this project has been the communication between the AGV and the local conveyor PLC, done with virtual signals via WiFi.

We have been there lately (2026) to add some stations to the existing system and the majority of QR codes are still good enough for AGV to read them and drive.

AGV navigation type: QR codes

Traffic controller: a server provided by the customer with TCP/IP communication toward the field, which includes Host communication, AGVs communication via WiFi, PLC communication.

Charging concept: charging stations with contacts in front of the AGV, when batteries are low, the vehicle is sent there to stay and charge, as well the AGV goes on charger when there are no transports to execute.

This AGV system is working over three shifts.

Number of AGVs: 5

AGV manufacturer: AGVE

Function: AGV navigation software development and AGV traffic controller and order handling development.
