AGV system at Iveco – Turin – Italy

At the Iveco Turin plant, the transmission assembly department extends across three areas where transmissions are shaped, then tempered in furnaces, washed, and finally assembled.

For each of those areas, an AGV system has been installed between 1989 and 1990. We then made some modifications and improvements (both hardware and software) in coordination with the WMS software so that we could reach new production demands.

AGV navigation type: inductive wire guidance.

Traffic controller: 386 PCs, with Digiboard multiserial ports, connected to all devices on the layout, including host communication, DI/DO signals and infrared transreceivers to communicate with AGVs.

Charging concept: on two systems, charging stations are with contacts on top of the AGV, while on the third AGV system, the contacts are on the side. When batteries are low, the vehicle is sent there to stay and charge, as well the AGV goes on charger when there are no transports to execute.

These AGV systems are working over three shifts.

Number of AGVs: 24

AGV manufacturer: Digitron

Function: AGV traffic controller development

Year: 1993
