AGV system in Lamborghini – Sant’Agata Bolognese – Italy

Lamborghini has significantly expanded its Sant’Agata Bolognese plant to produce its new SUV, the Urus.

To this end, it has commissioned three AGV systems:

  • 28 line AGVs, to transport the car body through all the assembly stations
  • 4 larger Powertrain AGVs, to transport the mechanical parts underneath the body to the so-called “marriage” station, where the upper and lower parts are joined
  • 11 small LGVs to transport trolleys containing all the components to be assembled station by station, from the SUMA area (where each trolley dedicated to a station is loaded with all the components to be assembled at that station for a specific URUS model) to the various assembly stations.

The system consists of the AGV management software that controls the traffic of all the vehicles and the on-board AGV navigation software, divided into two layers:

  • the first is the core BASE software that manages all low-level AGV operations, such as controlling the motorized wheel, actuators, safety laser scanners, elevator, etc.
  • the second is the navigation software that guides the AGV throughout the entire layout.

We developed or fine tuned the on-board navigation software for all three AGV systems.

AGV navigation type:

  1. Line and Powertrain AGVs: a series of small magnets under the floor
  2. LGVs: laser

Traffic controller: a server provided by the customer with TCP/IP communication toward the field, which included DI/DO handling, PLC and Host communication.

Charging concept: charging stations with contacts under the AGV . battery chargers are in correspondant of some stations (so AGVs will charger during they loop through production stations), while for LGVs, battery charger are placed in some dedicated area nearby the layout; when batteries are low, the vehicle is sent there to stay and charge, as well the AGV goes on charger when there are no transports to execute.

This AGV system is working over two shifts, morning and afternoon.
